TOTW: Must-Have Instagram Apps

June 17, 2013

Hey, lovelies! Happy Monday! It’s almost bed time for this girl right here. I’ve been getting a lot of messages from you creative genius’ out there asking how on EARTH I add so many cool filters, typography and handwriting to my Instagram photos (if you’re not following me on Instagram, what are you waiting for?!). I wanted to share some of my favorite pre-Instagram apps that really get my creative juices flowin’.. I’m sure there are a thousand apps out there to use that get you more followers, help with hashtags and that sort – but we’re keeping it strictly creative here. PLEASE, If you have any that you love equally as much, share them with the world and our Society Chic followers in the comments above! Happy Filter-Typograp-Cropping!

Krop Circle

Krop Circle is an app that allows you to import a photo that gets “cropped” into different shapes. You’ll see that this gorgeous, amazing, ever-so-sparkly ring is cropped into a heart. With just the free version you only have access to a circle, but with a small purchase you get shapes like skulls, numbers, triangles, birds, etc.

A+ Signature

A+ Signature is pretty self explanatory. it allows you to put your “signature” on any image. I opted for the A+ version because it allows you to add more than one signature. You’re free to use your own handwriting instead of using funky type. My handwriting isn’t the best, but it definitely gives my images a personal touch! You’re also able to add type to your images in a SLEW of different fonts.

VSCO Cam is a pretty over-all-amazing app that is made for iPhoneagraphers and people who really just love them some good photography. It’s simple interface allows you to use preset packs (colors, faded to black and white, etc), adjust exposure and focus, lighting, you name it! It’s got all the bells and whistles that a DSLR could give you that an iPhone never will. You’ll just have to see this one to believe it!

Picfx I’m sure is nothing new, but I still wanted to bring it up as one of my favorites. Instagram does a great job of keeping their filters fine-tuned, but with Picfx your possibilities are really endless. With options to add filters on top of filters, it can become quit crazy, but a good 2-3 is ideal depending on the look you’re trying to achieve. There are a few folders that contain Bokeh and textures, too!

One of my recent favorites and probably the one I get asked most about is Over. Over is an app that allows you to place different kinds of type and art on images to create really amazing photo/typography mashes. As someone who looks at type all day long and get thrills out of kerning some good type, it was nice to see a typographic app come along that really gives A+ a run for it’s money. I frequently use both, but Over holds a soft spot in my heart for sure. You can adjust charters, fonts, colors, alignment, the list goes on. It’s really the go-to app for creative people on the go!

A few others that aren’t listed in detail but are loved just as much:
Diptic – when Instagram’s standard square just isn’t going to cut it
Camera+ – Another pretty good “don’t-feel-like-using-the-iphone-camera” camera
LetterFx – Another crop type app, only using letters! (imagine squishing your face inside the word “LOVE” or “SWAG” – you catch my drift.

*Sidenote: I know that these are mainly iPhone apps and I regret to inform you that I don’t know a TON of apps for android – but feel free to list the ones that you like if you’re in the Android family!

Alright tweekers if you haven’t already jumped on the Instagram bandwagon then there’s no hope for you. Honestly, everyone and their mother is on it now, which means that everyone thniks they’re a photographer. Le sigh. It’s actually quite annoying. Also, I do have to say that as an iPhone user I am a bit prejudiced, and feel a little violated that the Android users can now partake in the instafun!

Anyways, amongst the pictures of food, kittens, and half naked hipster girls there are quite a couple of gems that shine brightly for fashion tweekers. Unlike most other social networking websites/apps that exist, I actually find use for the Instagram. You see, the thing is that I don’t understand why people have to constantly update their statuses or check into their waxing appointments etc. and want to share that kind of information with the world. Honestly I could care less that your hoo-hah is freshly waxed, or that your girlfriend left you for someone with a better credit score. I’ve always been a somewhat disinterested person unless it has to do with me.

As most of us know the Instagram let’s you upload pictures, and add old timey effects to them to give them that perfect vintage vibe. It’s also a great tool for us fashionistas to upload the trends that we love, as well as get style inspiration!

I’ve discovered many a great accounts that fulfill my fashion fix better than anyone could imagine. Here’s just a couple:

QPCollections (they offer handmade neckties and bow ties that I must get my hands on! )

Also, the other day I had one of my insomnia ridden Stumble Upon sessions and stumbled upon this ultra chic website called Printstagram, that lets you print out the pictures that you have on the Instagram. Now you can share those awesomely artistic pictures of your cooking, yourself holding your phone in front of the bathroom mirror, or those sunsets in many different forms. Amongst the items you can transfer your pictures onto are t-shirts, mini booklets, stickers, and old people. No not old people. I think that may be illiegal.

Anyways, I have yet to try this out, but as soon I start taking pictures of things other than my Kim Kardashian impressions I shall print something out. For more details in prices and such check out the website. Printstagram. And if any of you fashion tweekers happen to purchase any prints let us know how they turned out.

Technically Fashionable: iPhone Users

January 25, 2012

Hi, babes! So aside from wardrobe, I’m always looking for new ways to freshen up the spaces around me. Be it my office, my closet, my Nook, even my phone! One thing that will never leave my side is my iPhone 4. Android users.. your day will come. I am constantly changing my cases and screen protectors, not only for sanitary reasons (..ek!), but for the mere fact that this is one item I have to look at day in and day out. People are always asking me where I get my cases and my two contenders: & TJ MAXX (Marshalls, too!) I find that I am REALLY loving all of the Kate Spade iPhone cases out there.. but no case will give me the reassurance that I get with the Speck cases. I know Otter Box is the big wig around town, but try slipping that monster (secretly) in and out of your purse during a meeting, or fitting it into your very fashionably (small) clutch! Another nifty thing I like to use: Colored screen protectors! A pack at Marshalls will usually run you anywhere from $9.00 – $15.00 and come in White, Pink, Blue and a clear screen protector. Besides, not all of us were able to get our hands on the white iPhones when they were released (pouty face). Anyways, I’ve attached a few of my favorite looks. One thing I recommend to do every night before bed.. the wipedown! Germs just aren’t so fashionable these days! PLEASE, if you love a case and want to let our readers know which brand you’ve stashed away, leave it in the comments section. Until we meet again, OX – M

My Keychain is Full…

December 21, 2011

Why do our keychains always end up so full? Not just full of things we may need, but usually full of things we never use. But, we keep them on there just incase.. because we never know when we may need nail clippers, am I right? Either way, I’ve come to the conclusion that I will only put keys and one jump drive (usb for you new kids) on my keychain. I am a graphic designer after all, I need the usb.

Then… one day while blogging my little heart out, I saw a post about a key called the KEYPORT. I instantly went to the website and bookmarked the page. The KEYPORT is freaking amazing!!! It is basically one big key, similar to a VW type key, but it has 6 slots you can fill. You can put your home key, work key, car key, any regular key on this thing! The kicker is… you can add accessories to your KEYPORT!

You can have:

  • Almost any type of key
  • USB port (4GB, 8GB, 16GB)
  • An LED light
  • A bottle opener
  • Your barcode for any store, garage, gym

It may be too late to have one in had before the Holidays, but you can gift one to anyone or buy one for yourself. All you have to do is follow the easy instructions on the website, it is all electronic. Go to to order one!
