Birchbox Baby

Hey SocietyChicsters! Good gracious it has been some time! Life has really thrown us all for a loop lately. I tend to forgot how important posting means to me until it’s completely erased from my life and my inner blogger is just screaming to get out! I’m so sorry that we’ve been keeping you in the dark for so long. Thanks for sticking with us, guys! To start off the year (mid year, geez! I know.. I get it.) I wanted to share something I’ve been keeping secret for a little… BIRCHBOX!

For those of you that don’t know, Birchbox is a magical subscription that comes to your house every month (in a box *gasp*) filled with goodies! The newest and best products on the market, all based on your skincare regimens, skintype, age, etc. I swear I could be a spokesperson for this with how many people I’ve convinced to sign up for it. I think the anticipation of having to essentially wait “in line” to get your subscription alone tells you just how popular this is. Lo and behold, my 9 month anniversary came up and I decided I wanted -needed to do a post of all the products I’ve come across that made me think, “Where has this been all my life?!” Leave your comments below if you also love any of these products or if you have something from your Birchbox that isn’t listed! I want to know about it (insert evil laugh). Goodnight, babies!

Cinemagraph + Tiffany & Co.

Good Morning! Has every had their coffee this morning? Aside from needing my daily dose of caffeine (as a kid, I’d make my mom’s coffee and would taste it to make sure it was JUST right before handing it off to her. Therefore, I blame her for my slight addiction) I’m always browsing my favorite blog sites to spark a little inspiration and creativity. So, today I came across some pretty amazing photos that I wanted to share with you. From me to You is a popular photography blog I’ve been following -that I absolutely LOVE! The other day they featured these fantastic photos from Tiffany & Co. by Cinemagraph (Cinemagraph™ © 2011 Jamie Beck & Kevin Burg). When you have a chance, you’ve got to check out their website. I’m so obsessed with how the models are able to stay so still while they’re taking the photos. You almost have to sit and wait to see what is moving in the picture. So creative and daring. I hope you’ll find these images just as inspiring as I have!

A little sidenote I’ve kept in the back of my mind for some time: We all know that ideas and art don’t just come out of a can you can buy at the supermarket. Many people ask me “How do you come up with these ideas and outfits?”.. and my response is always “inspiration.” Bare in mind that we (Noche, Marti, Waffles & myself) will always try to feature things we’re loving, wearing, inspired by and the like. We never receive any kind of money for the items we feature, and if we do, we’ll be completely transparent about the relationships we hold with our partners. We just want you to love the stuff that we love -and we’re committed to doing just that. And.. well, if you don’t like it? Then that’s okay! While its wildly impossible to cater to all the masses, we hope that just one of our styles and ideas cater to at least one of you. Just something I’ve been wanting to share, because I get these questions all the time. I’m mustering up the time to come up with a quick FAQ page for all the amazingly great emails we get! So, enough of my rambling. Have a sweet Wednesday…
Oh, and remember to love a little, okay? ox - M

Thing of the Week: Little White Dress

So.. you knew this was coming, right? Every girl should own a LBD (Little Black Dress, for those of you living under a rock), but what about the little white dress we’ve seen gracing the runways and streets? I know, if you’re anything like me, you’re already trying to figure out how to pull off this look without resembling a toddler in “Sunday’s best”. It’s a difficult trend to pull, but with the right elements -you’re bound to nail your favorite look. So for the TOTW (Thing of the Week.. you poor, deprived rock-living people), I’m giving all of my ladies a fair share of the very trendy LWD. I hope you’ll find that one of our looks fits your style to a T. Have an awesome weekend and remember.. light dress, light food! Wine comes in all different colors, you know? :) *thumbs up* Later, babes. - M

Latest Obsessions: Marvel in March

Hey, lovlies! It’s been such a super-fab month for me. Checking things off my ‘to-do’ list, partaking in new adventures, and finding inspiration in the most unique places. I cannot stress how thankful I am that Spring is on it’s way and bringing TONS of color for it’s arrival. I’ve lately obsessed over a few things that I had to share! Remember to keep trying new things. As I continue to travel through this journey, I’m finding that it’s becoming easier to mix-n-match patterns, try different colors, and go out of my comfort zone for things I wouldn’t normally wear. The latest finds in Spring have shown that matching is just not in the cards! Add pops of color to your outfits by fasening a bright flower to your blazer, or find a patterned heel that you can pair together with a striped boat tee and a pleated skirt. Look out for our latest TOTW. I’m beyond excited to share! Until next time! *waves*

Waffy’s Word: Sunglasses

Hey there tweekers! It’s been a hectic time lately for my brain. I got kind of lost and sidetracked for a moment and ended up in Narnia. I was warned to not let my alter ego Waffy Lohan get in the way of my postings, but of course neither of us listen.

Buts alas, here I am in a semi clear state of mind ready to bring you this post of the ONE THING I completely and absolutely live for.

SUNGLASSES!

OMG, I love love love love sunglasses. I cannot stress enough how essential sunglasses are to my life. I feel naked being in public without my sunglasses.

Now, this post is just a tad different in that instead of focusing on a certain pair of sunglasses or bringing you great deals on them (which will still be done) I’m going to offer my philosophy and views on this must have, can’t live without accessory.

Ok, so first of all let me say that I absolutely live in my own world where I’m the star of my own life. It’s a tad delusional but I honestly believe that I am some kind of messiah brought upon this earth to bestow my beauty and knowledge amongst the mere mortals that inhibit this solemn planet.

Yes, I know im full of it, but humor me. Ok so I love sunglasses because i LITERALLY wear them ALL THE TIME. I can’t drive my car unless I have a pair of sunglasses on, I can’t walk anywhere in public unless my eyes are concealed, and heaven forbid someone look me directly in the eyes. Sunglasses are also the answer to hangovers. I mean slap on a pair of sunglasses on your mug and it’s like you’re refreshed and ready to take on whatever the day bombards you with.

I generally don’t like interacting or socializing with people when I don’t have to so when in public I always maintain a stoic facial expression as well as a big ‘ol pair of glasses on. Yes, I think I’m related to Victoria Beckham.

Anywhoooo, there are a couple of key things to remember when buying sunglasses. First of all take into consideration the shape of your face. I of course can pull most styles off, and for me the bigger the better. Here’s a quick guide to help you on your journey into super sunglass stardom.

guide

Rectangle:

Rectangular or oblong faces need frames that are wider. It’ll help your face not look quite so Humpty Dumpty like. Your faces is rectangular if it’s longer that it is wide.

Round:

Whatever for the life of you and those around you, DO NOT wear any round frames. Look for frames that are as wide as the widest part of your face. Any thing round or small will just make your head look like a globe.

Oval:

Praise the high heavens if you have an oval face. You have the face that everyone wants. Pretty much you have the birkin of faces. Your face can handle any style so don’t be afraid try anything on.

Square:

For this face shape you’ll want to choose frames that curve your face. Frames thar are round will be your best friends.

Diamond:

For a diamond face you’ll want to choose oval like frames. It’s highly likely that you have high cheekbones if you gave a diamond shaped face so also go for slightly bigger frames.

Heart:

You’ll want to choose frames that have a straight top line. These kind of glasses will balance out your face.

Oh and lastly, seeing as I tend to lose and break every pair of glasses I’ve ever had I don’t spend much money on them. I don’t usually buy brand name sunglasses. Certain retailers have great sunglasses for anywhere from $10-$15.

There you have it tweekers. Now set forth and spread Waffy’s word.

Work Approved: Color Blocking

Professional since I came out of the womb, I’ve always found shortcuts to making  fashion ‘work’ within my 8-5 timeframe. While, some of us have it more lenient than others, there are always ways to pull off specific looks in the workplace.. if you’re careful! We know that color blocking is still here to stay and I’m rounding the edges here a bit to accommodate for all careers and work areas. Let’s get started!

Think PINK: When you want to show that edgy, girly side to your outfit, you want to make sure you’re balancing the outfit out with some neutral shades or common colored purse. I’m usually ALWAYS playing it safe when it comes to heels in the workplace, mainly because the funky-colored shoes are usually not as comfortable. I stay towards the low-inch, chunky-heel, wedge category for work. So far, no complaints! Here’s a little nudge to your inner girly. I’ve always loved bow ties on men. I think it’s such a classic and trendy look.. and then thought, “What about us LADIES?!” Who’s to say that girl’s can’t pull off men’s wear better than.. well, MEN! Just poking fun, fellas! But.. Seriously, SHARE! :)

Think Pink

The Blues: I had to throw some pops of color in here, but by using a black/white scarf, you distract the mind of the variety of colors going on, which makes you look more pulled together! Not to mention some comfy loafers? I’m completely sold.

Have The Blues

Mellow in Some Yellow: When you want to be noticed, but not look like a clown, I’m finding yellow is the “it” color this season (a more mustard yellow to be exact). Here you can see that instead of pairing yellows with neutrals and browns, I’m trying something a little different. I, for some reason, think of the sea with this piece by piece. It’s playful, yet classy, and based around one solid color. Try finding one color that you absolutely LOVE and work your way around with it. Spend an extra 5 in the morning and try a new spin on your color blocking skills.

Nudie Pants: And finally to those who play it safe an awful lot, a nude (slightly) color-blocked outfit for your inner rebel. If you’re not yet comfortable colorblocking at work, try using your jewelry to get your feet wet. Even suspenders that can be hidden in the morning (with a jacket) and shown off later in the day when you’ve had your 3:30 coffee fix and are feeling ready to conquer some paperwork! :)

So there you have it, ladies! A few outfits to tie you over for the holidays! Be sure to always check with your HR department to find out the specifics of your dress code. If you’re not sure, email something you’d like to wear and see if it’ll fly. You never know until you ask! I hope this season we’re all given a little courage to pull off something more daring than these looks! After all, not all of us fetch coffee for the editor-in-chief at Teen Vogue and are not given the opportunity to make outfit statements everyday, so try using your 8-5 as an opportunity to test the waters! As always, send me your looks using hashtag #SocietyChic. ox - M

Nail it: NYE Edition

The time is near! New Year’s Eve is right around the corner and what better way to bring in the New Year then a glitter nail tutorial? While majority go for the silver and gold, I opted for the pink, barely-there hue & glitter! Essie’s newest collection “LuxEffects” had me pretty sold. Though, I was never really fond of the glitter-nail look, per say.. The consistency of the glitter is much more real for me. I can’t handle the same-sized specs of glitter that only shimmer in the light. Essie’s take on the glitter is Tres Magnifique! The dimensional specs pull light from all angles and REALLY let it all shine. Send me your styles to melissa@societychic.com or use hashtag #SCGlitter. I can’t wait to see!

What you’ll need: The “essentials” for prepping (acetone, files, cuticle pusher/cutter, Ms.Manicure lotion). Essie nail polish in “A Cut Above” and “Eternal Optimist” and Scotch tape.
